- W3036242018 abstract "Investigations have been undertaken on a series of microporous carbons, using both the technique of high resolution electron microscopy(HREM) and of immersion calorimetry. The combined use of these methods in elucidating the micropore size distribution, has enabled us to measure the interaction radius of an adsorbate molecule and show that the radius is reduced on adsorption within a micropore, as was previously suggested from theoretical calculations of Everett and Powl . The data obtained in the present work, however, shows that the reduction is greater than previously thought. A series of carbons,of differing degrees of burn-off, were prepared from a soft wood precursor, by activation in a fluidised bed reactor using carbon dioxide at 850°C. Micropore size distributions were obtained from these carbons by the technique of immersion calorimetry. This technique involves the exposure of the surface to molecules of different sizes,so that the heat evolved indicates the extent to which the molecules were capable of entering and adsorbing into micropores." @default.
