Early theorists of class expected that experiences of specific economic situations would generate particular political identities. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Culture and Personality School within anthropology argued that cultures were largely homogeneous and coherent systems and that individuals socialized into them internalized their values, beliefs, and behavioral expectations. Under the influence of social movements, historical developments, and theoretical arguments within the social sciences, anthropologists' understanding and use of these terms has since become more complex.
