- W3036529298 abstract "Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease mainly caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, this disease is considered as a major global public health issue, aggravated in recent years by the coinfection with HIV, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and the antibiotic resistance. The World Health Organization has pointed out that this disease needs more attention as priority and by 2030 its morbidity and incidence should be reduced. In order to achieve these objectives, new vaccines and drugs are required, as well as novel administration strategies that increase their efficiency. In this sense, nanotechnology has incorporated an important number of nanoparticles (NPs) that could provide a great diversity of delivery mechanisms of antiTB drugs. These new procedures could have important implications on the development of new and better strategies for treatment and care of TB. Based on the above, this chapter aims to briefly review the current situation on the drug-resistance in TB, the traditional and the novel drugs actually being used, and a short description of the main NPs used as carriers, and a brief list of examples about how they are being used as drug carriers against TB." @default.
