- W3036685313 abstract "Panelists: Stephanie M. Crumpton, Th.D., Hood Theological Seminary; AnneMarie Mingo, Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University; and Angela D. Sims, Ph.D., St. Paul School of Theology. Through faith, courage, and tenacity, Black women have boldly shaped politics of identity politics for themselves and their community. Drawing on the stories of Blacks who have experienced various forms of physical, psychological, and spiritual pain, this panel uses theological and ethical tools to explore the ways in which religion shapes responses to particular traumatic events. By uncovering, unmasking, and untangling personal narratives, this panel will interrogate the complex realities of pain and protest of Blacks while revealing identities of power that are molded through faith, courage, and tenacity. Dr. Stephanie M. Crumpton will present, “Claiming the Sacred: Black Women's Daily Practices of Self Recovery.” This paper examines the social and theological contours of Black women's experiences of intimate and cultural assaults in order to provide insight on the psychological, spiritual and social practices they deploy daily to address the complexities of their healing and self-recovery. Black female identities emerge out of the intersection where race, gender, class, sexuality and other social constructs meet. This means that if persons who are interested in Black women's wholeness intend to be serious in supporting them in self-recovery, they must be willing to take each of these dimensions seriously. This begins with first hearing the voices of Black women on their own terms as a point of departure for conversations of understanding, advocacy and support. This paper seeks to provide an entry point into these conversations. Dr. AnneMarie Mingo will present, “Transgressive Texts: Black Women’s Lived Theology and Politics through Civil Rights Music.” This paper explores the theological and socio-political declarations of civil rights music through the lyrics of songs or verses composed by Black women during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. As a part of the spiritual arsenal of Black women standing up against the traumatic forces of segregation, music expresses theological, ethical, and socio-political stances; making music one of the most powerful and portable non-violent weapons of the Movement. This paper examines civil rights music as a transgressive space for Black Churchwomen’s public theological and socio-political activism and leadership. Dr. Angela D. Sims, will present, “Civility in Our Age: Courageous Truth Telling as Social Activism.” This paper draws on select Remembering Lynching oral histories and Twelve Years a Slave to articulate ways in which truth telling functions as a form of social activism. To this end, this paper examines diverse ways in which notions of civility frame identity narratives. In the shadow of literal and metaphorical lynching trees, this paper explores the human capacity of African American elders to go into their interior archives and determine for themselves if, or how, they will give voice to a truth that reflects their lived reality." @default.
