- W3036694078 abstract "Agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution can cause eutrophication and ecosystem deterioration of the surrounding water bodies. Vegetated drainage ditch has been widely used for pollution mitigation from farmland, in which microbial communities and vegetation play important roles in the removal performance of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Hence, well understanding of their relationship would help to improve the potential of drainage ditch for N and P removal by optimizing the design and management. In the study, the N and P removal rates, as well as the bacterial communities in the sediment of three different ditches - one added with zeolite (SED), one planted with Vallisneria natans (VED), and the third added with zeolite and planted with the same vegetation (SVD), were investigated at three hydraulic loading rates (HLRs). The results showed that the N and P removal rates were significantly higher in vegetated ditches at the low HLR. The sediment bacterial communities in the vegetated and unvegetated ditches were remarkably different. Compared to unvegetated ditches, vegetated ones had significantly higher microbial abundance and diversity, which were positively correlated with N and P removal rates. The abundances of nitrifer Nitrospira and denitrifier Alphaproteobacteria were all significantly enhanced in vegetated ditches. Vegetation significantly decreased sediment electric conductivity and nutrient contents, which are the main factors structuring the bacterial communities. HLR and zeolite did not show evident effects on the bacterial diversity and abundance. Therefore, suitable vegetation is very important for the full function of the ditches in removing N and P from the farmland runoff." @default.
