- W3036883008 abstract "Abstract While most phenotypic variability seen in fungi can be accounted for by fixed changes in nuclear or extranuclear nucleic acid-based genomes, studies with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae have revealed a significant contribution by a novel class of epigenetic determinants, the prions. Prions are cellular proteins that can take up one or more alternative self-templating conformational forms that be transmitted during cell division. These structures are amyloid in nature. The conformational switch is accompanied by the emergence of a range of new phenotypes that in several cases cannot simply be explained by a loss of function of the prion-forming protein. How the metastable prion state is established in S. cerevisiae and the range of phenotypes linked to prions are reviewed." @default.
