- W3037140348 abstract "Abstract Functionalization of biomaterials with ligands is a key tool to achieve specific cell-material interactions with the final aim to finely regulate cell adhesion, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. The present chapter deals with state-of-the art strategies for the functionalization with peptide ligands of widely used classes of biomaterial substrates in regenerative medicine, such as hydrogels, polymer scaffolds/implants, and nanoparticles (NPs). Attention is initially focused on the bulk functionalization of hydrogels with cell adhesive, degradative, or anti-inflammatory peptide ligands, drawing some general criteria for their effective functionalization. Then, the chapter focuses on scaffolds based on synthetic polymers and non-adhesive polysaccharides analyzing the most widely used surface functionalization strategies to tune their interface for promoting cell receptor–ligand interactions. Finally, the chapter deals with the application of ligand functionalization in nanomedicine, by designing drug-loaded NPs, surface decorated with ligands targeting specific cell receptors, for a smart drug release to target cells by receptor-mediated endocytosis. In more detail, this chapter focuses on cardiovascular regenerative medicine, analyzing several representative case studies of biomaterial functionalization with specific peptides for cardiac and vascular applications. This chapter defines the best design criteria to prepare biomaterials provided with specific peptide ligands to get the target biological functionality. State-of-the art analysis allows understanding the most effective strategies and/or limitations of the approaches performed up to now, representing the baseline for future improvements." @default.
