The breeders, agronomists, and molecular geneticists in separate groups have made enormous contributions in generating improved varieties. These achievements have direct relevance to the larger development goals of food security and ameliorating hunger and poverty. Yet, until recently their academic accomplishments were perceived as weaker than the physiologists and molecular biologists, who provide insights into the mechanistic aspects of the form and function of plants. On the contrary, also until recently, the latter two experts were not critically acclaimed by hardcore breeders and agronomists, who questioned the impact cost of upstream research in product deliverables to society. After the initial crop improvements following the Green Revolution, the prevalent climate and demographic change scenarios have brought plant scientists of all sectors to appreciate the need to work together and address further improvements in crop yield and quality. Much remains to be done in realizing the potential of the synergies in such holistic collaborations. Complex traits of yield and quality improvement as well as stress tolerance can benefit the most by such multidisciplinary collaborations. We use the example of drought tolerance to illustrate the complex nature of the traits and how mechanistic knowledge can support breeding. The breeding and agronomy programs in their own right can steer upstream research into asking more relevant questions on the mechanistic underpinnings that can feed into product delivery." @default.
