- W303854037 abstract "Barry Malien. Philosophy: The Analytic Approach. Trenton, N.J.: World Press, 2006. vii + 361 pp. Photographs. Bibliography. Index. $34.95. Paper. Barry Hallen argues that the analysis of how concepts are used in ordinary language is an essential methodology of analytic philosophy. Such an approach, he maintains, constitutes African philosophy, insofar as it may deal with the analysis of (or meanings) and the evaluation of beliefs expressed in these languages (86). In his view, deriving a philosophy from will not begin until we can correctly understand and translate the relevant meanings. He then applies this method to examine concepts such as knowledge and beauty in Yoruba. The book is divided into four parts. The first critically examines the views of the philosophers Richard Rorty and Paulin Hountondji and of social anthropologists who deny that Africans have a legitimate philosophy because their beliefs are based on tradition. The characterization of beliefs as suggests that cultures are closed and intolerant of criticism and change, that their beliefs are dogmatically held and not subject to rational justification or critical examination. When appeals are made to tradition, such appeals are usually not provided as justifications but as origins of these beliefs; and when these beliefs are the basis for action, the invocation of tradition indicates descriptively the rules of action rather than theirjustifications. Thus the critique of beliefs based on tradition involves the genetic fallacy: it confuses the origins of beliefs with theirjustifications. In the second part, Hallen turns to methodological issues regarding the application of analysis to languages. The traditional nature of cultures implies heavy reliance on open-textured oral tradition as the process of transmitting beliefs and preserving knowledge. Such reliance creates the problem of indeterminacy in translation, because researchers rely for their translations on native informants who are supposedly proficient in the language and knowledgeable about the culture. Hallen examines the implication of Quine's indeterminacy thesis for the application of ordinary language analysis to in these efforts to provide accurate and determinate translations. He then addresses substantive issues regarding the connection between epistemic and moral values in Yoruba culture and the epistemic status of witchcraft and Ifa divination. Hallen addresses the charge that the secret epistemic activities and abilities associated with witchcraft and Ifa divination cannot square with Western epistemology, which involves open and critical inquiry requiring objective standards of evaluation. Many scholars have hitherto characterized witchcraft pejoratively as an evil metaphysical phenomenon. This characterization is substantiated by Hallen's account of his personal experience when he taught witchcraft in a course and invited colleagues from other disciplines to provide their perspectives. …" @default.
