- W3039978179 abstract "Hypotheses on regional song variation (“dialects”) assume that dialects remain stable within regions, are distinct between regions, and persist within populations over extensive periods [1Baker M.C. Song dialects and genetic differences in white-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys).Evolution. 1975; 29: 226-241Crossref PubMed Google Scholar, 2Podos J. Warren P.S. The evolution of geographic variation in birdsong.Adv. Stud. Behav. 2007; 37: 403-458Crossref Scopus (205) Google Scholar, 3Goodale E. Podos J. Persistence of song types in Darwin’s finches, Geospiza fortis, over four decades.Biol. Lett. 2010; 6: 589-592Crossref PubMed Scopus (25) Google Scholar]. Theories to explain dialects focus on mechanisms that promote persistence of regional song variants despite gene flow between regions [4MacDougall-Shackleton E.A. MacDougall-Shackleton S.A. Cultural and genetic evolution in mountain white-crowned sparrows: song dialects are associated with population structure.Evolution. 2001; 55: 2568-2575Crossref PubMed Scopus (140) Google Scholar, 5Poesel A. Nelson D.A. Changes in performance of shared and unshared songs within and between years in the white-crowned sparrow.Ethol. 2015; 121: 1-11Crossref Scopus (6) Google Scholar, 6Beecher M.D. Birdsong learning as a social process.Anim. Behav. 2017; 124: 233-246Crossref Scopus (28) Google Scholar], such as juveniles settling in non-natal populations retaining only those songs from their repertoires that match neighbors [7Nelson D.A. Song overproduction, selective attrition and song dialects in the white-crowned sparrow.Anim. Behav. 2000; 60: 887-898Crossref PubMed Google Scholar, 8Nelson D.A. Poesel A. Does learning produce song conformity or novelty in white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys?.Anim. Behav. 2009; 78: 433-440Crossref Scopus (26) Google Scholar]. It would be considered atypical for a novel song variant to invade and replace the established regional variant. Yet some studies have reported song variants shifting rapidly over time within populations [9Janes S.W. Ryker L. Rapid change in a Type I song dialect of Hermit Warblers (Setophaga occidentalis).Auk. 2013; 130: 30-35Crossref Scopus (7) Google Scholar, 10Trainer J.M. Cultural evolution in song dialects of yellow-rumped caciques in Panama.Ethology. 1989; 80: 190-204Crossref Scopus (52) Google Scholar, 11Ramsay S.M. Otter K.A. Geographic variation in white-throated sparrow song may arise through cultural drift.J. Ornithol. 2015; 156: 763-773Crossref Scopus (10) Google Scholar]. White-throated sparrows, Zonotrichia albicolis, for example, traditionally sing a whistled song terminating in a repeated triplet of notes [12Falls J.B. Kopachena J.G. White-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), version 2.0.in: Poole A.F. The Birds of North America. Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 2010Google Scholar], which was the ubiquitous variant in surveys across Canada in the 1960s [13Borror D.J. Gunn W.W.H. Variation in white-throated sparrow songs.Auk. 1965; 82: 26-47Crossref Google Scholar]. However, doublet-ending songs emerged and replaced triplet-ending songs west of the Rocky Mountains sometime between 1960 and 2000 [11Ramsay S.M. Otter K.A. Geographic variation in white-throated sparrow song may arise through cultural drift.J. Ornithol. 2015; 156: 763-773Crossref Scopus (10) Google Scholar] and appeared just east of the Rockies in the 2000s [14Zimmerman H.D. Ramsay S.M. Mesias V. Mora M. Murray B. Otter K.A. Evolution in white-throated sparrow song: regional variation through shift in terminal strophe type and length.Behaviour. 2016; 153: 1839-1861Crossref Scopus (6) Google Scholar]. From recordings collected over two decades across North America, we show that doublet-ending song has now spread at a continental scale. Using geolocator tracking, we confirm that birds from western Canada, where doublet-ending songs originated, overwinter with birds from central Canada, where the song initially spread. This suggests a potential mechanism for spread through song tutoring on wintering grounds. Where the new song variant has spread, it rose from a rare variant to the sole, regional song type, as predicted by the indirect biased transmission hypothesis [10Trainer J.M. Cultural evolution in song dialects of yellow-rumped caciques in Panama.Ethology. 1989; 80: 190-204Crossref Scopus (52) Google Scholar].Video AbstracteyJraWQiOiI4ZjUxYWNhY2IzYjhiNjNlNzFlYmIzYWFmYTU5NmZmYyIsImFsZyI6IlJTMjU2In0.eyJzdWIiOiI4ZGFkZTE4NTVmNzczOWI4MmVlYjY5YTkxNDgyNjk4MSIsImtpZCI6IjhmNTFhY2FjYjNiOGI2M2U3MWViYjNhYWZhNTk2ZmZjIiwiZXhwIjoxNjM4NDQxNjQwfQ.eOjc2fjY7ghSyyR5o15VLpvszk3Jiscw1Ii1IVG3liSNMoPH6YwpDHYGgSpsBJQ5bVSiLniwg_qVggGmFzemlmwQ7L9A0zgATNyI3Mb2y2WuZ0GfVDZwHFj_ij5O8hIbD4eJTmHL-v4HIDHr_p8WC5XSJwaR5_ssh0DDtUIFjrckHdircmzbopicVvIdTGwXHN9TAksVFrtqiMkE_EwX_2gnOA-BlR64aiDpIbFjNKaC2KLZpblYWX590jGS-_JXEL7g45lkvc2vnTrNFIIXpiP7ixIQetempoujyc7dFJmUxw_wLdM-6DgXSPR_dIyQFv1R0QCeBmgRRAQR8kFFng(mp4, (43.42 MB) Download video" @default.
