- W3040381577 abstract "This chapter looks at the functions of the pop songs which make up DreamWorks’ soundtracks. DreamWorks were the first mainstream American animation studio to prominently and recurrently feature pop music in their films as opposed to original songs, and this is one of the areas in which they are most visibly influential. Its main focus is the use of music as cultural shorthand, tapping into the existing associations attached to songs in order to flesh out the films’ settings and characters, and to affect the viewer’s relationship with the animated world. The chapter suggests three functions that music can perform in this regard: it can reinforce a sense of realism, draw comparisons between fantastical settings and our world, or create dissonance, leading to humorous incongruities." @default.
