- W3040911913 abstract "This essay discusses the shared zone of urban agriculture and community gardens in contemporary Israel. It proposes a model that integrates two prospering practices into a more sustainable and durable land use. Based on a decade-long research on past and present urban agriculture in Israel, I suggest a framework of partnership between urban governance, social and environmental NGOs, and local communities. Their collaboration promises to ease the difficulties that such projects face, such as lack of land, shortage of water at affordable price, and a need for professional guidance. Making place for productive green community spaces within our cities goes hand in hand with the global trends of edible cities, with the sustainable discourse, with the search for community life in cities and with the nostalgia of the Israelis for the agricultural ethos of pre- and early-statehood period. It also expresses the need for a new kind of urban space, for new aesthetics in the public realm and for new relationships between people and their immediate surroundings. Making these gardens part of public institutions marks the durability of the projects as well as the obligation of the municipalities to maintain them." @default.
