- W3040952939 abstract "Biodiesel is being widely explored as an environmentally friendlier alternative to petroleum-based fuels. However, the process of synthesizing biodiesel results in 10 weight percent co-product glycerol. One potential way to add value and reduce waste is to use this co-product glycerol as the hydrogen bond donor in the preparation of a deep eutectic solvent (DES; a solvent system similar to ionic liquids comprised of a hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA)). Several literature reports detail the formation of a DES using synthetic glycerol and choline chloride (ChCl); we showed that DESs can also be formed using biodiesel co-product glycerol and ChCl. One aim of the current work is to extend the use of co-product glycerol for the formation of DESs. We began by examining eight different HBAs in attempts to make DESs with synthetic glycerol; four were successful. For these four HBAs, a second suite of DESs were prepared using biodiesel co-product glycerol. The second aim of this work is to use the DESs prepared with co-product glycerol in organic chemistry teaching labs to illustrate many of the principles of green chemistry. Potential teaching experiments explored included three Diels Alder reactions, an olefin cross-metathesis reaction, and a ring-closing metathesis reaction. 1H NMR and GC-MS analysis were conducted on the products of each reaction. Of the reactions studied, the ring-closing metathesis was the most successful and product verification was easily performed. Additionally, the DES was successfully re-used for subsequent reactions, illustrating another green chemistry principle." @default.
