- W3042184427 abstract "The environmental fate of pharmaceuticals should be modeled to assess their risks and aid in their management. Reviews on the natural attenuation of pharmaceuticals are quite limited. The current review examines recent studies on the in-stream attenuation of pharmaceuticals. Monitoring studies have shown that pharmaceuticals are both sensitive (e.g., ketoprofen, ibuprofen, and azithromycin) and insensitive (e.g., sulfamethoxazole, primidone, and carbamazepine) to in-stream attenuation. Direct photolysis by sunlight, sorption to sediment, and/or biodegradation in the hyporheic zone has been found to affect in-stream attenuation. Modeling approaches for direct photolysis and sorption are also summarized. Future areas for research on in-stream attenuation of pharmaceuticals are briefly discussed." @default.
