- W304275638 abstract "Formaldehyde (HCHO) is the most common air pollutant of the aldehyde family. It is known tobe a toxic and carcinogenic compound present in both residential indoor and industrialenvironments. Exposition to formaldehyde in higher concentrations (over 0,1 ppmv) can causewell-known effects as irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract, headache, nausea, difficulty in breathing, allergic skin reactions, among others.Rapid and reliable methods are still required for the determination of formaldehyde, so theobjective of this project is to develop an affordable, cost-effective and easy-to-use flow basedspectrophotometric method for the measurement of formaldehyde (HCHO) in liquid samples. This Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) provides advantages as reproducibility, simplicity, low cost, flexibility and high sensitivity that previous batch-wise assays didn’t have.Previous research has been carried out to find a suitable chemical basis and referring toprevious papers of chemical journals the reaction will be held between hydroxyl ammoniumsulfate and the analyte, formaldehyde. After this, a reaction between exceeds of hydroxylammonium sulfate, Fe(III) and a ligand will take place. A colored-complex will be produced. Todetermine the concentration of formaldehyde an indirect analysis is done. The decrease of thecolored-complex compound is proportional to the concentration of formaldehyde. The flow-based system will be studied and developed to obtain the optimum work conditions.Studied parameters will be: temperature in reaction coil, length of reaction coils, flow rate, pH ofbuffer, and concentration of reagents. Under the optimum conditions the calibration curve will bedetermined. The reliability of the system will be checked by the analysis of industrial waste water thatcontains formaldehyde and compared to a standard method. As direct application of the systemis the analysis of industrial wastewater it will be necessary a study of interference compounds. Results of the study accomplish the prospects above mentioned. The system is a reliable flowbasedspectrophotometric method for the easy and rapid determination of the concentration offormaldehyde. Moreover it is a highly sensitive system with high repeatability that has nosignificant difference in results compared to a standard method." @default.
