- W3043157995 abstract "Tropical islands are often referred to as “microcosms,” given their potential to represent natural laboratories and they appeal to many scientists who study them. Despite their small size compared to larger continental land masses, tropical islands have proven difficulty to characterize, particularly in the face of disturbance and rapidly changing land use and land cover (LULC). Here, we provide an example of how field observations of one of the major components of the carbon cycle—soil respiration—can be useful in identifying major patterns in carbon fluxes across a heterogeneous island. Our findings suggest that carbon fluxes such as soil respiration are highly sensitive to changes in moisture availability, particularly in dry locations or during dry periods. Furthermore, our observations suggest that soil respiration fluxes are also strongly mediated by vegetative cover. We conclude by arguing that not only is the study of the carbon processes of tropical islands necessary to characterize the carbon status of these important ecosystems, but also a viable opportunity to improve our understanding of carbon balance and exchange in highly heterogeneous landscapes in other parts of the planet." @default.
