- W3043393435 abstract "This chapter focuses on the heels of other excellent reviews of this material and is an attempt to incorporate, information into the body of literature on spicule formation in echinoderm embryos. The developing embryo of sea urchins forms calcareous endoskeletal spicules, and an examination of spicule formation provides a splendid opportunity to study the cellular and molecular bases of calcite skeletal formation. Micromeres of sea urchin embryos are formed at the fourth division following fertilization. They arise by unequal cleavage of the lower vegetal tier of four cells at the eight-cell stage. The demonstration that sea urchin embryos contain and express growth factor genes, coupled with the observation that inhibitors of protein kinase C selectively inhibit spicule formation, reinforce this possibility. Elimination or reutilization of the spicule elements may occur during metamorphosis. In indirect developing sea urchins, the adult forms from a group of cells, the echinus rudiment, located on the left side of the larvae." @default.
