- W3043720006 abstract "Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common and can affect individuals of all ages. Occurrence is estimated to be over 3 million cases per year in the United States alone. It has been widely recognized that there is the need for improved clinical guidelines to diagnose TBI and to predict severity of downstream consequences. In particular, in athletes and military personnel, a consistent and rapid diagnosis of mTBI has recently gained front-page relevance. Biomarkers are surrogate diagnostic tools that span from analysis of circulating molecules from body fluids, to brain imaging and measures of oculomotor deficits. When dealing with circulating markers of CNS diseases, one must take into account the blood–brain barrier (BBB). With this fact in mind, this review will focus on markers that can be sampled from body fluids. In particular, we want to address the following questions: (1) are markers of TBI all brain derived? (2) Do all biomarkers appear in peripheral circulation only after BBB disruption? (3) Are nucleic acids and their recently discovered miRNA components specific for a given neurological disease?" @default.
