- W3043893348 abstract "In the aftermath of Independence, a theatrical movement emerged in India as a means of protest against politicaland social repression of the innocent people belonging to the lower strata of Indian society. Safdar Hashmi, theacclaimed theatre activist and an avowed communist playwright, used theatre as a potent weapon to voice hisdissent against political tyranny and the hypocrisy of social orthodoxy. Safdar Hashmi became the face of thepostcolonial theatre of dissent, who used theatre as a potent tool to criticize the social and religious orthodoxy ofthe time and also to expose the downfalls of the society, and also to give voice to the unprivileged, voice to raiseprotest against injustice, exploitation and oppression perpetrated upon them for ages. Being an avowed Marxist,Hashmi perfectly blended Marxian ideology and his revolutionary zeal to form his own neoteric theatre  thetheatre of protest. Hashmi truthfully rendered the suffering and exploitation of the proletariat who have sufferedexclusion and suppression for ages in Indian capitalist society. His radical plays aimed at making the obliviousmasses of India aware of their political and social exploitation and motivate them to raise a voice againstcapitalist oppression and to find out a path of liberation through revolution. This article intends to study theinclusion of revolutionary Marxist aesthetics in the dramaturgy of Safdar Hashmi, and endeavours to provide aMarxist reading of his plays." @default.
