- W3043992350 abstract "Vanitas Chapter Two is a mixed-reality performance for smartphones and historic cemeteries. It employs a smartphone app to play 70 minutes of headphone audio through 11 episodes separated into five acts, that audience members listen to as they walk alone through the cemetery. In the background, the app also communicates with bespoke transmedia server software created for the project called ‘Phantom’. Phantom controls the timing of digital epistolary in the form of SMS (text messages), emails and phonecalls sent to the audience member as they walk. These are designed to deliberately interrupt the flow of the app audio and cumulatively inaugurate the ‘spectral character’ of ‘Asphodelus’, that the audience member communicates with but never meets. Each episode is edited as an ambient montage of voices and original music which follows the creators Walton and Maling through the cemetery as they meet experts in burial, grounds keeping, cremation, memorial sculpture, witchcraft and flowers. The artwork provides an alternative mode for contemplating death and discovering the significance of cemeteries in contemporary life." @default.
