- W3044129275 abstract "Abstract The discovery of antibiotics is the most significant breakthrough in the field of medicine and chemotherapy. They are extensively employed in the prevention or treatment of infections of microbial origin. Their widespread applications and easy availability have promoted their unrestrained use. This uncontrolled exploitation of antibiotics has led to the development of resistance against them within many microbes. Antibiotic resistance can be explained as the ability of a microorganism to protect itself from the effects of antibiotics that could once be lethal to that microbe. The microorganisms, over time, have evolved and developed resistance against numerous chemicals, including antibiotics. The rise and spread of antibiotic resistance among pathogens in the past years has been alarming. There is a vital need for new antimicrobial drugs with novel mechanisms of action to treat the infections caused by resistant microbes. Apart from discovering new drugs, controlling the microbes from attaining resistance is necessary. Understanding and study of genes that are responsible for imparting resistance to a pathogen can help us in developing novel efficacious antibiotics." @default.
