- W3044165211 abstract "The modern nation-state is a European invention founded on the development of both statesand nations throughout European history (Alter 1994; Breuilly 1994). While all democraticnation-states share a number of common features, there is also a great diversity in how theyexpress these features (Loughlin and Peters 1997; Dyson 2011). This diversity derives, at leastin part, from the religious origins of the modern state, especially the creation of ‘confessional’states by the Treaty of Westphalia, which ended the European Wars of Religion in 1648. Thesewere initially Catholic and Lutheran states but were later joined by Calvinist states in theNetherlands, Scotland and, for a time, England. However, the roots of these states go backeven further in European history, and many of their features derive from theological andphilosophical debates that pre-dated the Reformation and the Wars of Religion (Burns 1988).Today, these theological origins are almost entirely forgotten, and the nation-state is regardedby most historians and political scientists as the quintessential secular state, in the sense that ithas completely discarded any religious dimension in its practical operations. In this chapter, Iseek to explore to what extent the modern nation-state still retains some of these olderinfluences that shaped its development and to what extent this accounts for its present-daydiversity. This, in turn, raises the question of what it means to call the nation-state ‘secular’, aswell as the different meanings and uses of this term." @default.
