- W3044388081 abstract "Abstract Human immunodeficiency virus has been a leading cause of morbidity in the last three decades. The introduction of Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has controlled the disease to a large extent, but an effective cure is still not achieved. Clustered Regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and associated Cas9 system aims at a cure rather than control of HIV. CRISPR-Cas9 consists of a guide RNA that has a sequence complementary to CCR-5, a gene present on the white blood cells. The two binds together and are recognized by the Cas9 nuclease. Cas9 has a scissor like action, it cuts the complex at the target site and inactivates it. Current approaches using CRISPR-Cas 9 aims at targeting CCR-5 gene to confer resistance to HIV infection. In this mini-review, we introduce this technology to general physicians and inform about its current and future applications in treating HIV-1 infection." @default.
