- W3044603485 abstract "Cyanobacteria are ubiquitous organisms that can perform photosynthesis and release oxygen in the environment. They are present in both freshwater and marine ecosystems. They synthesize a plethora of secondary metabolites exhibiting antimicrobial character. They dwell in various extreme environments and in order to thrive in these varied regions they have developed various mechanisms and adaptations. These adaptations in cyanobacteria enable them to synthesize a variety of metabolites possessing antimicrobial properties. In the modern era, where everyday drug resistance in the microorganisms is increasing, the number of available drugs is becoming limited to counter the pathogenic infections. Cyanobacteria are the least exploited species in this case. Their secondary metabolites are active against many known pathogens. Both marine and freshwater species synthesize metabolites active against pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and algae. A few of them have an antiviral effect. This chapter deals with the various antibacterial, antifungal, antialgal, and antiviral metabolites produced by cyanobacteria." @default.
