- W3045259925 abstract "The effect of chemical treatments on the drying of fully exposed lucerne samples was investigated under controlled conditions in a multiple-sample experimental drying unit. The drying characteristics of treated and untreated detached leaves and stems were compared to those of the leaves and stems of whole plants. Treatment effects on the drying of whole lucerne plants were studied under a range of drying conditions. Microscopic examination of stomatal aperture and porometer tests were also undertaken. Treatment with sodium azide solution to inhibit stomatal closure substantially increased the initial drying rate of detached lucerne leaves. The drying rate of stems increased marginally, but the effect on whole plants was small. The drying rate of untreated and sodium azide treated whole plants was greater than that of equivalent amounts of detached leaves and stems. Treatment with potassium carbonate solution to reduce cuticular resistance to moisture transfer increased the drying rates of detached lucerne leaves and stems. This increase appeared to be maintained at low moisture content levels. The drying rate of whole plants was only slightly greater than that of equivalent amounts of detached leaves and stems. The magnitude of stem-leaf moisture transfer has been estimated by comparison of the drying characteristics of attached and detached leaves and stems. Whole plant drying models based on the exponential drying characteristics of detached leaves and stems, and the moisture transfer between them appear to explain the phenomena observed. Field tests were undertaken using automatic equipment to monitor the weight of adjacent swath samples.
