- W3046551891 abstract "Abstract The subject of the present study is the Ericsson engine composed of a reciprocating compressor, a heater, and a reciprocating expander. The numerical investigation presented focuses on the effect of the compressor-expander phasing. The phase lag with which the compressor and expander reach their respective top-dead-centers determines whether the heater communicates sequentially or simultaneously with these devices. This in turn affects the necessary crank angle interval during which the heater is occupied by a compressor-expander pair, the number of such pairs that can be combined with a single heater, and, ultimately, the power-to-volume ratio. The investigation initially compares the effect of changing the phasing angle, while maintaining the compressor exhaust phase and the expander intake phase durations. In one of the two cases examined the heater is used sequentially by the compressor and expander, while in the other, the expander intake phase and the compressor outlet phase overlap. The operating characteristics of the engine are then analyzed. The investigation proceeds examining a series of different phase lags that allow the simultaneous heater utilization by the compressor and expander. All of the cases can accommodate an integral number of compressor-expander pairs. Two of these are compared to previous studies by the authors, in which the communication of the heater with the compressor and expander was sequential. With the simultaneous heater utilization by the compressor-expander pair, the total power-to-volume ratio and the thermal efficiency increase for the cases examined." @default.
