- W304713278 abstract "Live in Ramallah / West-Eastern Divan Orchestra / Daniel Barenboim / Beethoven Symphony no. 5 / Mozart Sinfonia Concertante, K. 297b. Program notes by Peter Quantrill in English, German, French, and Spanish. Warner Classics 2564 62791-2. 68'77''. ©2005. $16.98. This program, recorded live in the Palace of Culture in the city of Ramallah on the West Bank, is both a musical and a political document, representing the work of Israeli-born Daniel Barenboim and his Palestinian friend, the late Edward Said, in creating a bridge toward peace through music. (Ironically, as I write, in July, the Middle East conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors has escalated into a horrific war, killing innocent civilians by the hundreds.) The two friends founded a youth orchestra in 1998 with the idealistic aim of combining musical study and development with the sharing of knowledge and comprehension between people from cultures that traditionally have been rivals. Its name, West-Eastern Divan, refers to a collection of poems by Goethe, who was said to be one of the first Germans truly interested in other countries. The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is based during the summer in Andalusia, where the members work intensively to develop their musical skills and discuss their differing points of view on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Young Spanish (and other) musicians join the group of primarily Arab and Israeli members. The conclusion of their study period is an international tour, under the leadership of Barenboim. Barenboim has made his mark as a multi-gifted musician, a child prodigy at the piano, and a noted conductor. He is an intelligent, probing musician, and a courageous one, who will be remembered for his devotion to artistic rather than political principles in his determination to perform Wagner in Israel some five decades after the end of WWII. He is no doubt a great inspiration to these young musicians. The orchestra plays very well as a group, and the soloists are excellent. The Mozart Sinfonia Concertante, K. 297b, is not the familiar masterpiece for solo violin and viola that is a favorite of music lovers, but a companion piece of sorts, with woodwinds as the solo instruments. Mozart composed it during a journey to Paris, the birthplace of the sinfonia concertante, for performance at the Concerts spirituel. There are some questions about its genesis, the actual date of its composition, and the existence of the only authoritative copy, but not about its authenticity. It is echt Mozart, a lovely work that deserves to be played and heard more often. …" @default.
