- W3048235637 abstract "In recent echinoids there are two main types of lanterns (Märkel, 1978) : the clypeasteroid type (lantern more or less flat, without compasses; teeth ± horizontal, with small plate parts; a grinding lantern), the regular type (lanterns high, with compasses; teeth more or less erect, with voluminous plate parts; a gripping lantern). The lanterns of the regular type are provided with strong joints formed by the rotulae and the epiphyses. The joints of the lanterns have been described by Lovén (1892) and Jackson (1912), who used the lanterns of cidaroids as examples. In Cidaroida the joints are socket-joints, in non-cidaroids, however, they are hinge- joints. The homologies between the joints of both types are discussed in detail elsewhere (Märke1 1979). The foramina and the deep pits which are characteristics of the non-cidaroid lanterns are obviously connected with the structure of the hinge-joints. The mobility of the main joints is restricted by secondary joints and by rotular muscles. In socket-joint lanterns the mobility is apparently more restricted than in hinge-joint lanterns." @default.
