- W3048346081 abstract "Separation and removal of carbon dioxide from process gases is an important issue from both process and environmental perspectives. CO2 removal may be considered as an industrial commitment according to the industrial standards and required characteristics of treated gases for downstream processes. CO2 removal is critically important due to the issue of greenhouse effect and global warming. However, traditional methods only contribute to separation and removal of CO2 from mainstreams. Unless the removed CO2 is somehow stored, eventually, it will be released to the atmosphere. Hence, any traditional method can be viewed as a temporary solution. In other words, current approaches are not sustainable and CO2 capture from the atmosphere may also remain as a challenge for the future of the planet. Among the (potentially) available techniques for CO2 capturing, methods based on the natural biological transformation processes would be more promising, sustainable, and effective. As an example, during the photosynthesis process, carbon fixation reactions result in CO2 capture (removal) and its conversion to carbohydrates and biomass. This chapter presents a problem statement regardingthe status of biological methods for CO2 capture. In addition, the carbon fixation pathways are briefly reviewed. Finally, the challenges of industrialization and applying these approaches in real scale are discussed." @default.
