- W3048496798 abstract "• Birch has densely branched root system that strongly influence soil properties. • Birch positively influence soil nutrients and biological turnover intensity. • Effect of birch trees on soil organic matter stocks and quality is unclear. • Birch positively influence soil microorganisms and enzymatic activity. • Birch shows large potential for phytoremediation of contaminated soils. The present work aims to bring together existing knowledge of the complex relationship between birch ( Betula spp.) trees and their soil environment. Birches are currently receiving a growing interest due to their increasing prevalence in forests resulting from secondary succession, but also their use in site preparation in afforestation of post-agricultural lands. This paper shows that out understanding of the plant-soil relationship in birch forests is patchy and inconsistent. Perhaps understandably, the habitat requirements, management, growth and biomass production of birches are better understood than their wider role in the ecology and soil development in forest ecosystems. Observations reviewed in this paper paint an incomplete picture, existing data often originate from mixed forests and do not have direct import for newly created birch monocultures. One of the best understood features is the phytoremediation potential of this species. Other aspects, such as its effects on soil organic matter, enzymatic activity, meso- and macro-fauna are still little studied. In conclusion, we show that future research should utilise ad-hoc birch chronosequences generated by the abandonment of agricultural land and focus on uncovering the birch-soil feedbacks in forests dominated by these pioneer species." @default.
