New analytical techniques have enabled the discovery of distinct inclusions in diamond hosts having mineral associations that constrain the mineralogy at great depths within the Earth. Currently, experimental studies are revealing the stability of novel iron oxides not found at Earth’s surface but that would be present in the mantle. We combine textural and chemical analyses on ferropericlase inclusions contained in a diamond sample and demonstrate that the observed association of magnetite + FeNi metal exsolved from the matrix results from postentrapment decomposition at the expense of a natural Fe 4 O 5 phase recently discovered and characterized in high-pressure experiments." @default.
