- W3048776984 abstract "Coniferous and deciduous trees growing in pure and mixed forests supply different resources to soil microorganisms thereby shaping microbial communities. However, effects of different forest types including non-native species on microbial communities and their variation with site conditions such as soil type and nutritional status remain poorly understood. We quantified functional (substrate-induced respiration and stress indicators) and structural (phospholipid-derived fatty acids) responses of microbial communities to forest types at four nutrient-rich and four nutrient-poor sites. Five types of forests were investigated at each site, including pure stands of native European beech (Fagus sylvatica), range-expanding Norway spruce (Picea abies) and non-native Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), as well as mixed species stands of beech with spruce or with Douglas-fir, i.e., 40 forest plots. Forest type only affected soil microorganisms at nutrient-poor sites, but not at nutrient-rich sites. At nutrient-poor sites, both pure and mixed coniferous forests, in particular pure Douglas-fir forests, detrimentally affected soil microorganisms compared to beech forests. By contrast, structural and functional indicators of microorganisms in beech forests at nutrient-poor sites resembled those at nutrient-rich sites, likely because beech maintained the provisioning of high amounts of root-derived resources. The results indicate that long-term effects of planting exotic tree species such as Douglas-fir either in pure or in mixed stands on ecosystem functioning need further attention especially at nutrient-poor sites, but planting Douglas-fir at nutrient-rich sites appear of little concern from the perspective of microbial communities. Overall, the results highlight the potential importance of root-derived resources in determining microbial community structure and functioning, and document the sensitivity of soil microorganisms to planting non-native tree species that may differ in the provisioning of these resources from native species." @default.
