• W3048893085 abstract "Nanoscalecatalysts that can enable Fenton-like chemistry and producereactive radicals from hydrogen peroxide activation have been extensivelystudied in order to overcome the limitations of homogeneous Fentonprocesses. Despite several advantageous features, limitation in masstransfer of short-lived radical species is an inherent drawback ofthe heterogeneous system. Here, we present a mechanistic foundationfor the way spatial confinement of Fenton chemistry at the nanoscalecan significantly enhance the kinetics of radical-mediated oxidationreactionspollutant degradation in particular. We synthesizeda series of Fe3O4-functionalized nanoreactorswith precise pore dimensions, based on an anodized aluminum oxidetemplate, to enable quantitative analysis of nanoconfinement effects.Combined with computational simulation of spatial distribution ofradicals, we found that hydroxyl radical concentration was stronglydependent on the distance from the surface of Fenton catalysts. Thisdistance dependency significantly influences the gross reaction kineticsand accounts for the observed nanoconfinement effects. We furtherfound that a length scale below 25 nm is critical to avoid the limitationof short-lived species diffusion and achieve kinetics that are ordersof magnitude faster than those obtained in a batch suspension of heterogeneouscatalysts. These findings suggest a new strategy to develop an innovativeheterogeneous catalytic system with the most effective use of hydroxylradicals in oxidation treatment scenarios." @default.
