- W304899612 abstract "This paper presents an empirical argument in favor of the view that the two types of secondary predication―depictive and resultative constructions― ―represent two distinct aspectual structures (cf. Rothstein 2003, 2004, Tenny 1994, and others). The evidence to support such a claim is not readily available in languages like English, due to a superficial syntactic similarity between the two types of constructions. Japanese, unlike these languages, has the depictive and resultative constructions that display a morphological difference: nominal depictive predicates are marked by de, not ni, whereas resultative predicates are marked by ni, not de. It is argued that this variation, discussed in previous works (Nishiyama 1998, 1999, Takezawa 1993, 2001) but thus far left without a principled explanation, receives an account under the proposed ni-te analysis, which views the de as a phonological realization of two lexical items―ni and te. Then, we show based on empirical evidence that this account is in line with the recent claim that depictive predication involves a temporal duration, while resultative does not. Finally, it is shown that the ni-te analysis makes a correct prediction on the (non-)occurrence of de/ni-predicates in small clauses and in identity sentences in Japanese." @default.
