This chapter documents the qualitative method of ‘sandboxing’. In sandboxing participants create a scene within a box filled with sand using miniature figures and objects, which is then discussed in an elicitation interview. The chapter draws on empirical examples from two separate studies, one with mature students in higher education and one exploring the transition to secondary school for children. The chapter documents the advantages and limitations of sandboxing as a tool of social research, as well as reflecting on the related ethical tensions, and considering how this technique could be embedded in future studies in the field of education." @default.
