- W304998093 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes peripheral catecholamine metabolism in anorexia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is a disorder that most commonly occurs in young women and is characterized by a distorted attitude toward food, a relentless pursuit of thinness, and obsessive thoughts of being too fat. Patients with anorexia nervosa often exhibit a drive for increased physical activity. Symptoms of depression and anxiety may precede or accompany the weight loss and continue after weight recovery. Amenorrhea may precede weight loss, but it inevitably follows extreme loss of weight. Underweight anorectic patients have alterations in multiple endocrine systems, abnormal thermoregulation, bradycardia, and hypotension. It is possible that a primary dysfunction of hypothalamic regulatory centers may exist in some patients with anorexia nervosa. This dysfunction may produce anorexia nervosa symptoms and weight loss and account for continued symptoms in some patients after weight recovery. Such abnormalities may be reflected in changes in catecholamine (CA) metabolism. Brain CA are important modulators of all the systems disturbed in anorexia nervosa—appetite, mood, activity, and endocrine, autonomic, and metabolic systems." @default.
