- W305888331 abstract "Sotheby's (London), May 21, 1998 Christie's (London), June 3, 1998 Sotheby's (New York), June 26, 1998 Sotheby's (London), December 4, 1998 Sotheby's (London), January 28, 1999 Stargardt (Berlin), March 31, 1999 Simple and Direct (Las Vegas), April 28, 1999 Sotheby's (London), May 21, 1999 THE SOTHEBY'S SALE IN LONDON ON MAY 21, 1998 ONLY HAD three Beethoven lots, but it still managed to exhibit the two extremes in auction bidding. The first lot was a two-page autograph leaf from a conversation book, written in pencil, unsigned with various comments about yearly accounts, the study of nature, and finding lodgings for a student. Although there was no clue as to place or date, Sotheby's placed a circa 1824 Vienna identification based on its contents. Other than very slight creasing at the corners, it was described as in good condition. The estimates were £7,000-10,000 ($11,760-16,800), but it failed to sell. A mixed lot of about thirty items only had a few Beethoven compositions among the twenty other composers and it suffered the usual fate of mixed lots by being bought in by the auction house, in spite of the modest estimates of £300-450 ($500-750). Then there was a very early issue first edition of the Fortepiano Sonata, Opus 27, no. 1, the companion to the Moonlight Sonata. This copy had no imprint or plate number and might well have been a proof copy. Since the Center does not own a first edition of this sonata, extra financial sources were marshaled in order to make a determined effort to acquire it. The estimates of £1,000-1,500 ($1,680-2,500) were too low to be considered and spirited bidding reaching £4,600 brought the hammer down. The Center's final bid was topped by the prominent London dealer Albi Rosenthal and the sonata presumably is in the Beethoven-Haus. The dollar equivalent, which includes the usual auction house premium, amounted to $8,900. The Christie's London auction of June 3, 1998 was lacking the fire and storm of the fortepiano sonata sale and only shared the fate of the other two items. It included a proof impression etching of Beethoven by Emil Orlik, an artist of some reputation. The etching was 565 mm. x 385 mm. (c. 22 x 15 inches) with price estimates of £700-1,000 ($1,200-1,700). It failed to find a buyer. On June 26, 1998 the New York branch of Sotheby's offered a Beethoven ALS (autographed signed letter; Brandenburg no. 504; Anderson no. 312) for sale. This was a reappearance for this letter, which was sold at Swarm Galleries in New York on September 14, 1993 for $32,000 plus the premium. The details are given in the summer 1993 issue of The Beethoven Newsletter (volume 8, no. 2). A brief recap of the details of this unusual letter are merited here. It is addressed to Count Palffy, a prominent theater director in 1811. Not only was Palffy not pleased by Beethoven's music, but neither man was liked by the other. Beethoven wrote that an actor named Scholz planned to produce a melodrama The Ruins of Babylon for one of Palffy's theaters. Beethoven wanted Palffy to stop this production in order to reserve the story for himself for a contemplated opera. Beethoven used some choice invective to make his case, including a hint of enlisting the considerable clout of Archduke Rudolph on his behalf. The letter is a unique testimony to Beethoven's character since it must be noted that no evidence has ever been found that Beethoven ever worked on this project. The sale price plus premium totaled $57,500, a substantial appreciation for the five-year interval between the two sales. The largest Beethoven sale of 1998 occurred in December at Sotheby's London rooms. It took place on the 4th of the month with nine Beethoven lots offered. The character of this auction could be labeled as extremes. First editions with seemingly reasonable low estimates failed to reach them, while non-musical items far exceeded the estimates. Perhaps the most bewildered observers were the officials at Sotheby's who set the estimates. …" @default.
