The broadcast is received at a nearby school, which makes two copies of the videotape and sends the tapes to the bank library headed by Carla VanderPol, staff development officer. at the $205 million-assets bank check the tapes out and are expected to return them in three days. Each of the bank's 13 branches is equipped with a TV/VCR unit, and the staff can view the tapes during their lunch hour. Although viewing is not mandatory for the bank staff, it's not all fun and games either. To monitor employees' usage and to reward them for their extra effort, the bank introduced United Bank & Trust's Diploma Program, which offers the staff three diplomas: an associate's, a bachelor's, or a master's degree. To receive the associate's diploma, employees are required to watch 48 segments, or log 16 hours of viewing. The required segments include 24 job-related topics (for example, frontline, lending, or compliance); eight compliance; five executive management; one capital; two human resources; and eight electives. who receive an associate's diploma are rewarded with lunch with the bank president, a framed diploma, and recognition in the bank's bimonthly publication. To receive a bachelor's diploma, employees must have received their associate's degree and view an additional 48 segments. build upon their major--the job-related segments focused on in their associate's--and select a a second area of interest. are required to watch 20 segments related to the major, ten segments related to the minor, five compliance, two executive management, two capital, four human resources, and five electives. are rewarded with a framed diploma, a half day off with pay, and mention in the bank publication. can shoot for the master's diploma after completing their bachelor's. Staff who have reached their master's are eligible to pursue continued education credits, in which they must view two segments each quarter to receive $35 for that quarter. According to VanderPol, United has enjoyed enormous success with the program. In 1994, 114 employees watched 1,342 segments, and in 1995, 134 of the staff watched 4,491 segments--an increase of 235% over 1994. As of January 1996, 14 of the employees had completed their master's, 20 had reached their bachelor's, and 37 had their associate's. Employees like the recognition, says VanderPol. So many people at the bank talk about it, that others just jump on the bandwagon. Not only do they receive recognition for their viewing, employees mention that the broadcasts give them a better understanding of their job and their coworkers' jobs. Drawings widen appeal Sierra Tahoe Bancorp, Truckee, Calif. Sierra Tahoe Bancorp began using throughout its 11 locations three years ago. Each week the broadcast comes in at the main office in Truckee where it is picked up by three VCRs, one for each of the $245 million-assets holding company's three libraries located throughout the region. Skylink is an asset to people just coming into the industry.
