- W307187248 abstract "Low-Cost Research Sources Business professionals recognize the need for timely market research information. However, obtaining information has traditionally been costly, either in human resources or dollars expended. This report presents some effective ways for gathering research information quickly and inexpensively. Using the Public Library Public libraries maintain copies of the Business Periodicals Index, the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, and the Reader's Guide to Scientific Literature. These indexes list the latest articles in selected topic areas, from advertising to personnel to retail location. For example, using the Business Periodicals Index, you can botain a listing of all of the articles on various aspects of accounting which have appeared within the last month, quarter, year, or decade in such nationally known business journals as Business Week, Fortune, Forbes, The Harvard Business Review, and the Journal of Small Business Management, along with numerous other business and trade periodicals. By monitoring current publications, the entrepreneur can keep pace with the latest managerial and technological developments within an industry, and gain insights about new marketing opportunities. Public libraries also maintain phone books for both local geographical areas and major cities across the United States. These serve as excellent starting points for identifying suppliers and clients. Association directories can also be found in any library. These offer the names, addresses, and phone numbers of each industry's trade and professional associations. These directories in particular--Gale's Directory of Associations, Ayer's Directory of Associations, and The National Trade and Professional Association Directory (NTPA-84)--collectively offer over 6,000 association listings. These associations themselves can provide trend information, surveys, publications, educational programs, referral services, lobbying support, monthly newsletters and magazines, and many other services and activities. Associations play an important role in the life of a successful entrepreneur. Moreover, membership in peer groups and target market associations can easily pay for itself within a year or two if you take advantage of the services and activities they offer. Many public libraries also contain a newspaper index that abstracts newspaper articles by topic and cross references each listing by date. The Wall Street Journal Index, for example, is available in many public libraries in major cities. In order to identify a specific or perhaps obscure industry or trade journal, consult Working Press of the Nation, Writer's Market, Bacon's Publicity Checker, or the Standard Periodicals Directory. These dictionaries are updated annually, and collectively contain listings of over 10,000 technical and trade publications. Trade publications can help entrepreneurs to identify both sources of supply and potential customers. In addition, most publications sell their mailing lists--a boon to any small business's direct mail campaign. Suppliers' guides, often called blue books or red books, can be found in the business reference sections of many public libraries. Fr exampl, the Blue Book of Metro Area Home Builders,' and the Red Book of Plumbing Supply Contractors' are often distributed by the local associations serving these industries. Thomas' Register and Cahners Buyer's Guide contain a wealth of information if you need to purchase any type of durable good. In addition, these guides can also be used as target market lists. The fastest way to locate any of these indexes or directories is simply to consult the local librarian, who maintains a wealth of information. This valuable resource is paid for through tax dollars and should not be overlooked. Federal Government Information Sources The federal government is one of the largest publishers in the world. …" @default.
