- W307278871 abstract "This article provides reader with an insight on Telephone Pioneers of America, its mission and its commitment. It also highlights one empirically-tested, educational program that pioneers are providing to children in United States and in Canada to enhance their self-concept development and reading and writing skills, at no cost to schools, through other partnership alliances. The International Organization The Telephone Pioneers is largest industry-related volunteer organization in world. Its membership, over 800,000 strong, is made up of current and retired employees of telecommunications industry. Pioneers have a long history of answering call of those in need. The association was founded in 1911 by Alexander Graham Bell and today, members are all across U.S., Canada and Mexico. Members give to their communities time and expertise. They volunteer to help better lives of people with disabilities, people who are homeless and otherwise disadvantaged. And when disaster strikes, such as this past winter's flooding in Dakotas and southern Manitoba, Pioneers were there, helping to clear debris, providing food and supplies. While Pioneers across North America pursue a wide variety of community service projects, association's special focus is on education. Pioneers want to be known as the education volunteers and have gone into schools to help strengthen quality of learning for youngsters. By partnering with other education-focused organizations, Pioneers recognize huge potential for their membership to have a real and lasting impact on education. In Canada for example, Pioneers work with Industry Canada, a federal department, to bring computer technology to Canadian classrooms and public libraries through their Computers for Schools program. On November 7 of this year, program was greatly expanded by including Sears Canada, Inc. in partnership. A new, national campaign aims to deliver over 100,000 computers to schools and libraries by year 2000. In U.S., Pioneers' Memorandum of Cooperation with Federal Department of Education is creating new education partnerships across country. In their work with Junior Achievement, Pioneers focus on teaching useful skills to elementary school students. One of Pioneers' most popular programs, Playground Maps, brings large scale, colorful maps of nation to playgrounds across U.S. and Canada. Added to these projects are tutoring, teaching technical skills needed in high-tech business, repairing of talking books for students who are sight-impaired or blind, providing accessible trails to many of U.S. national parks where schools venture for out-of-class learning, and mentoring--one on one--with a student lacking positive role models. …" @default.
