- W308042385 abstract "LANGUAGE ARTS, VOL. 77, NO. 3, JANUARY 2000 We have confession. For long time, was something we didn't discuss much at our K-5 elementary school. We weren't sure where it fit into our progressive philosophy of literacy learning (Atwell, 1987; Calkins with Harwayne, 1991; Graves, 1983), nor could we agree on the best ways to provide instruction. Some of us continued to use commercial program, despite its lack of alignment with our teaching of reading and writing. Others provided almost no explicit instruction at all, preferring to let students come to their knowledge of the system in natural way, through immersion in literacy tasks. A couple of teachers allowed students to choose their own words to study for tests, but they were often frustrated by the kids' seemingly arbitrary selections, as well as the lack of transfer to their writing. The one thing about which we all agreed on those rare occasions when we admitted it was that none of these approaches was working as well as we wanted. Over time, we were unable to ignore the evidence that students suffered from our lack of consistency. We noticed that children who transferred to us from other schools tended to be better spellers than those who had been with us since kindergarten. Students' test scores in lagged behind their scores in reading and writing. Even more disturbing was the fact that many children in our classes seemed to lack what Gentry (1997) calls spelling consciousness: a habit of caring about expert when is important (p. 48). For these students, our message about spelling's limited role in first-draft, exploratory writing had been translated into, Spelling doesn't matter very much. Eventually, we turned to schoolwide teacher research as way to resolve these tensions. With the help of university facilitator, Kelly Chandler, we read and discussed variety of professional literature on (Gillin, 1992; Laminack & Wood, 1996; Wilde, 1996), gathered samples and survey data from classes schoolwide, and developed individual research questions like the following:" @default.
