This chapter interrogates the primacy of power in the governing systems characterized by the principle of separated but shared powers among the three branches of government. It introduces the nexus between power and the exercise of legislative oversight of impeachment in the Nigerian presidential system. The challenges of balancing the interests of the state with the desires of the individual political elites often characterize the exercise of legislative power to control the executive branch of government in a developing democracy like Nigeria is often met with stiff opposition. This chapter introduces the power dynamics in the practice of a presidential system in Nigeria. It identifies the various mechanisms set out by the Constitution to control state power for the promotion of good governance and highlights how the political elites circumvent constitutional provisions for the promotion of their selfish objectives." @default.
