- W3083138088 abstract "INTRODUCTION:Lactation failure is the mother’s inability to provide adequate amount of milk for her baby. Lactation failure may be due to maternal anxiety, wrong advice from family members, delayed feeding, incorrect positioning of mother and baby, insufficient knowledge and lack of guidance and education. Breastfeeding is not so natural as it is thought to be. It has to be practiced, learned, and it needs a lot of determination, patience and effort on the part of the mother. A strong determination to breastfeed and the patience to get up at frequent intervals help the mother to become a successful breast feeder.STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:A study to assess the prevalence of lactation failure with a view to develop a self instructional module to promote the lactation among primipara mothers in selected hospital at Gandhigram.METHODOLOGY:The quantitative research approach was used in this study. The research design adopted for this study was descriptive. The study was conducted in the postnatal wards of the Kasturba memorial hospital, Gandhigram. The convenient sampling technique was used for sampleselection. The sample size was 100 who fulfilled the inclusion criteria.OBJECTIVES:1. To assess the prevalence of lactation failure among primipara mothers in the selected hospital, Gandhigram.2. To find out the association between the prevalence of lactation failure among primipara mothers and their selected demographic variables such as age, education, occupation,income, religion, type of family, diet, area of residence, sleeping hours during the night, baby’s sex, baby’s age and birth weight of the baby.HYPOTHESIS:There will be a significant association between lactation failure among primipara mothers and their selected demographic variables such as age, education, occupation, income, religion, type of family, diet, area of residence, sleeping hours during the night, baby’s sex, baby’s age and birth weight of the baby. MAJOR FINDINGS OF THE STUDY:❖ Majority of the mothers (79%) were in the age group of 21 to 30 years. Regarding educational qualification, 25% of the mothers were educated up to higher secondary level and 11% were illiterates. With regard to occupation, 62% were housewives. In most of the samples (52%), their income was between Rs.1000 to 3000. Regarding area of residence, 75% were from urban areas. Regarding baby’s age, 60% of the babies were inthe age of 24 hours to 48 hours. While considering the birth weight of babies, 35% of babies were below 2.5 kg.❖ The majority of the mothers 74 (74%) had adequate lactation and 26 (26%) of the mothers had moderate lactation.❖ There is a significant association between the prevalence of lactation failure and demographic variables such as age, education, sleeping hours during the night and birth weight of the baby.❖ There is no significant association between the prevalence of lactation failure and demographic variables such as occupation, Income, religion, type of family, diet, and area of residence.RECOMMENDATIONS:Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that1. A replication of the present study can be conducted with a larger population.2. A similar study may be replicated with randomization in selecting the participants.3. An experimental study can be made between the effectiveness of structured teaching program and self-instructional module.4. A Comparative study can be made to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice on breastfeeding between urban and rural primiparamothers.5. A comparative study can be made to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding lactation failure among primipara and mulitpara mothers.6. A comparative study can be made to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding lactation failure among the literate and illiterate mothers. .CONCLUSION:Positive thinking by the mother who feels confident of producing enough milk for the baby can extend the period of breastfeeding. The result of this study reveals that there is a moderate lactation failure exist among primiparamothers. Also in this study, selfinstructional module has been given to promote lactation among primipara mothers. In order to promote lactation, primiparamothers have to properly educated through mass media or awareness programs so that in the future, the nation may feel proud of having healthy and strong citizens." @default.
