- W308315667 abstract "This research was designed to investigate whether the type of questions asked and the stimuli about which the questions were asked would have any effect upon children's cognitive processes that could be measurable through an analysis of the children's oral language production used in answers to the questions. Much has been written about the effects of questions upon student thinking (Gallagher, 1965, Lowery, 1973, Taba and Elzey, 1964) . Ruddell (1974) viewed cognitive processes as being related to the level of question asked, with questions asked at an interpretive level viewed as stimulating higher cognitive processes than factual questions requiring mere recall or immediate information. Gall (1970) stressed the fact that while much has been written about the criteria for identifying effective questions, few researchers have explored the relationship between the questions and the answers to questions. When designing questions to enhance higher cognitive processes, one notes that the type of stimulus used to elicit answers may vary in effectiveness with children at different ages. Piaget, contrasting perception with thought, observed that during the preoperational stage of development perception is centered upon predominate characteristics while thought can escape this limitation of centering (Berlyne, 1957). Rohwer (1970) observed that the ability to use linguistic or verbal means of storing and preserving information emerged earlier developmentally than the ability to use visual processes.
