- W3085215195 abstract "In this chapter, the author suggests how the people might approach teaching a series of lessons on sentence-level analysis, chiefly focusing on the author teaching of Conan Doyle's 'The Sign of Four'. He examines how being able to analyse and write about sentence choices – for example, how writers use them in dialogue to achieve particular effects – allows students to develop greater understanding of how meaning is constructed linguistically. After having undertaken sentence analysis, students have an idea of how Conan Doyle has linguistically constructed the text to create a detailed impression of a fictional detective and his idiosyncratic way of speaking and behaving. Furthermore, by closely analysing how sentence types and functions have been used to represent a character’s idiolect or speech patterns, students will have an enhanced ability to create their own convincing characters and will feel more confident in consciously crafting their own writing and commenting on the reasoning behind their creative choices." @default.
