- W308529158 abstract "In the visual system, at least as far as the retinocortical pathway of mammals is concerned, the thalamic relay, the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), is the first and only stage where visual information arriving from the receptors can be interfered with by efferent systems before it reaches the visual cortex. The visual system provides especially favorable conditions for the analysis of thalamic gating functions. The specific sensory input to the thalamic relay depends exclusively on stimulus parameters and therefore, any changes in the output of the thalamic relay can be related directly to the alterations of thalamic transmission. In thalamic transmission, the main response patterns of the postsynaptic cells characteristically differ only little from those in the afferent fibers. In general, the spontaneous activity is reduced in the thalamocortical pathway and the responses to stimuli become more phasic; however, the characteristic receptive field properties of retinal ganglion cells are by and large preserved." @default.
