• W3085337322 abstract "This study investigated the quitting behavior of adult smokers since the Taiwanese government implemented a notable increase (20 NTD) in cigarette taxes in June of 2017. Smoking cessation data were obtained from an annual national telephone interview survey of adult smoking behavior. This study included ever-smokers aged ≥18, excluding those who had quit smoking more than 1 year prior to the survey. Logistic regression was used to estimate quitting status after the cigarette tax increase. Analysis was weighted by population distribution. Surveys conducted in March and October 2017, and February 2018 revealed that despite the large increase in 2017 (from 77.4 to 105.9 NTD), the price of many cigarette brands did not change until 2018. Nonetheless, it appears that the announcement of a cigarette tax increase prompted many people to quit smoking as early as 2017, compared to the quit rate in 2016 (OR=1.74) Note that there was no significant difference in quit rates in 2016 and those in 2018. We identified the utilization of smoking cessation services as an important facilitator for quitting (OR=2.18). Males, those with a higher or middle educational level, and those with a middle monthly income were more likely to quit smoking. Those who reported a poor self-rated health status and those exposed to secondhand smoke were less likely to quit. Note that the utilization of e-cigarettes was in no way related to the likelihood of quitting smoking. There was time lag between the increase in taxes and the increase in cigarette prices. It appears that the expectation of a price increase was sufficient to prompt many people to quit, and smoking cessation services were also shown to have an effect. We suggest that the government raise tobacco taxes gradually and improve accessibility to smoking cessation services." @default.
