- W308616113 abstract "of the most interesting and significant changes in education in the last few years is in the way in which curricular materials get written. In the last fifteen years we have seen an increasing emphasis on the development of curricular materials by national curriculum studies. This movement was, of course, initiated in the physical and biological sciences and in math but has gradually spread until we now find national curriculum projects in virtually every discipline producing material for virtually every grade level, K-12. These projects are national in the sense that they are, for the most part, not associated with a particular school system, but are supported by private foundations, the National Science Foundation, or the United States Office of Education, and in many cases, are sanctioned by one of the scholarly disciplines. These projects do, in fact, see themselves as producing material for national consumption. Although much has been said and written about the materials prepared by these projects, insufficient attention has been given to the implications of having an increasing share of the curricular materiais for use in die schools written by national curriculum projects. As educators, we need to raise the question: At the present time, is this the best way for curricular materials to be written? With full realization of the diversity in American education, with full realization that curriculum is seen as something peculiarly local national curriculum projects have advantages which far offset their in nature, my answer to the question is: Yes, In my opinion, the disadvantages. Arnold Grobman, in his excellent book, The Changing Classroom: The Role of the Biological Sciences Curitculum Study, states as the major thesis of his book that . . the best way to improve curricula in America is through the establishment and support of curriculum studies with action programs dedicated to the improvement of education at all levels (2, p. 3) ." @default.
