- W3087879452 abstract "Background: Hypertension is one of the major public health problems in India. As per NFHS-4 data, 11% of Indian women and 15% of men aged 15-49 are hypertensive and in Odisha overall prevalence is 26%. Health Literacy plays an important role in maintaining a healthy life and preventing hypertension. However, nearly half of people having hypertension don't know about their disease status. Data on level of health literacy status specifically on hypertension among rural population in India is very scanty. The purpose of this study is to assess the difficulty in accessing, understanding and using the health information relating to hypertension in Paniora village, Jatni block, Khordha district of Odisha state, India. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken using the HLS-EU, Q47 tool, validated for use in Asia Pacific countries, contextualized to hypertension. 358 respondents in the age group of 15 years and above from randomly selected households in the study village were interviewed by the Master of Public Health Students. Data was entered in Epi-info and analyzed in SPSS software. Findings: Out of 358 respondents 150 were males and 208 were females. One fifth (19.8%) of the respondents were illiterate. Nearly 51.7% and 64% of the respondents find difficulty to access information about the symptoms and treatment of hypertension respectively. 70.4% of respondents having difficulties to understand the information in media how to remain healthy and prevent hypertension. 57.3% people find difficulties to understand what to do in case of emergency like stroke in case of hypertension. Only 37.8% of the respondents find easy to judge the reliability of health warning such as smoking, low physical activity, high salt intake, diet and drinking too much in connection with hypertension. Only 27.9% of the respondents understand the importance of screening for hypertension. 63% of respondents find difficulty to judge the reliability of health warning such as smoking, low physical activity, diet, salt intake and drinking too much in connection with hypertension. 73% of respondents did not feel the importance of taking part in community activities for health and wellbeing relating to hypertension. The findings reflect poor health literacy status in respect of hypertension. Conclusion: Assessing health literacy status is feasible in rural community, and more evidence needs to be generated in different population groups with systematic study." @default.
