- W3088346070 abstract "Abstract Ethics is the science of how humans should treat others. The ethical principles, moral theories, laws, case precedents, and virtues imply an obligation of one party to another. The question is to whose interest are the obligations directed? One might believe that the interests that drive the development of ethics in everyday medicine are to the patient. However, the historical record demonstrates that this is not the case. The argument is made that originally the interests of the physicians were the primary concern. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, business and government interests supplanted those of the physician. Business-centric ethics has bred a subtype being consumer-centric. Within the interests of physicians, a subcategory has emerged as academic/scientific interests which may come to dominate over physicians. The proper place of patient interests can only be advanced by understanding the historical dynamics." @default.
